Niles Canyon Railway - Full Waiting List Started

PRO is pleased to announce a run on the Niles Canyon Railway, Niles, CA on Saturday, April 14, 2018. We will make 3 runs. At least one run will go to the end of the line. The cost of the run is $55 per car. Please send your check made payable to PRO to Steve Paluso, 2878 Rosario Court, San Jose, CA 95132. Please include your email address with your check. Eastern WA Gateway RR

Set on in Wilbur on Friday. RT to Medical Lake on Saturday. RT to Coulee City on Sunday. Approximately 195 total miles through Eastern Washington. This is a NARCOA/PRO excursion. ALL rules apply. Proper Footwear, Hi-Viz, and Radios Required. No car limit. No Hi-Rails please. Non-mentoring. Excursion fee is $250 USD or $310 CD. Checks deposited 4-2-2018.

City of Prineville Railroad, OR

Joint with Dave Balestreri's MOW North West run (http://www.mowonline.org/).
We will make two runs over this track. Operators are asked if they can volunteer to give rides to to the public on behalf of the RR. The run fee is $25 for complete details contact Guy Howard 541-998-5280 ghoward@efn.org.

Set on at the Tillamook Blimp Hangar (at the airport) from 0645 to 0730, Safety Meeting at 0800. Depart for Batterson to end of track after safety briefing, take a lunch break at Wheeler. Return through Wheeler, Rockaway and Garibaldi, with a stop there to visit the four active steam locos there, and then proceed to the Blimp Hangar for set-off. PRO 2018 Montana Run - Full Waiting list started

The PRO 2018 Montana Tour will be held June 1-6. The run will begin on Central Montana Rail (approx. (100 rdt miles). This is part of the former Milwaukee Road Northern Montana Division and Great Northern Lewistown branch at Denton, MT. This run will include four large steel trestles, one tunnel and some magnificent Montana scenery. 

We will then move to Montana Rail Link’s 5 - 6th subdivisions with travel to Logan and Harrison out of Whitehall (130 rdt miles) (www.montanarail.com). The 5th is part of the former Northern Pacific’s passenger main line traveled by the North Coast Limited along the Jefferson River. The 6th was built as mining branch in 1890 and ascends Antelope Creek via a 2.2% grade.

The tour will finish at Mission Mountain Railroad at Stryker, MT. We will travel to Stryker and Eureka. This consits of a portion of the the former Great Northern’s main line prior to the construction of Libby dam and the formation of Lake Kookenusa in 1970. Beautiful scenery abounds and we will be very close to Glacier National Park (50 rdt miles).

Please send the run fee of $450 to EC Bill Taylor, 6853 Lamar Trail, Florence, MT 59833. Make checks payable to PRO. There is a 25 car limit. No reservation will be accepted without payment. Those seeking to operate with trailers, HiRail vehicles or oversized cars must receive the EC’s permission prior to set on.

This is a NARCOA insured run through remote portions of Montana. Participants and passengers must be physically able to walk at least two miles in case of an emergency. Radios with the NARCOA frequencies are recommended. Proper footware and clothing is a must. Cell service is spotty. Participants are responsible for their own lodging and meals. Dry camping is allowed at set ons. USFS approved spark arrestors are required.

Copper Basin Railway

Copper Basin Railway excursion on Friday, Oct 19th. 100 miles round trip. $80 per car. Limited to 40 motor cars (due to limited parking). Set-on in Hayden, AZ. Open to all NARCOA insured and NARCOA rulebook certified operators. However, mentoring new operators cannot be accommodated. Spark arrestors and brake actuated taillights required. Smoking NOT permitted in motor car or on RR property. To register, provide an email address as excursion information will be sent by email. 2018 Tentative Planning Calendar

PRO is pleased to present a preliminary outline of runs being planned for next year.

  • Railroads in Alberta Canada postponed until 2019 - EC Doug Gentles
  • June 21-24 - Coos Bay - EC Bill Andrews, cancelled (see above in red)
  • August 16-19 - Coos Bay - EC Guy Howard, see above in red
  • September 20 - City of Prineville - EC's Guy Howard & Rich Wilkins
  • September 22-23 - Island City to Joseph - EC's Guy Howard & Rich Wilkins
  • (TBD) October Coos Bay - EC Bill Andrews, see above in red

Work is under way to to return to some lines we have run in previous years. Lewiston, V&T, Copper Basin, Albany and Eastern, Oregon Coast Scenic, Lake View.

Remember these runs still await approval of the railroads, so keep checking the list for any changes. When runs are opened for signed up they will first be listed on the NARCOA site.
